Ashita no Midgets

I currently edit and QC for Saizen Fansubs, working on the 1970 boxing anime Ashita no Joe, which has never been fully subbed. In the process of catching up with Joe, I have noticed a strange and disturbing thing.

I want you to carefully consider the following series of screenshots.

Ashita no Joe - Rikiishi Toru, lightweight

Ashita no Joe - Yabuki Joe, bantamweight

Ashita no Joe - Aoyama is tiny

That’s right, everyone in this show is a midget. According to the definition of lightweight, Rikiishi Toru maxes out at 135 lbs, while Joe weighs in at under 118 lbs. And if they’re that small, how small is Aoyama? I’m convinced he would get absolutely slaughtered by that Pomeranian from Tokyo Jungle.

Anyways, I like this show enoguh to fansub it, so I might as well give you my thoughts.

Show: Ashita no Joe

Genre: Boxing, Western (kinda)

Premise: In a run-down shithole somewhere in Japan, a drifter blows into town, stirs shit up and catches the eye of a washed-up boxing coach.

Initial Draw: Joe’s unrelenting douchebaggery. Joe’s conscious attempts to be as much of a prick as possible are, ironically, pretty endearing.

Stumbling Block for People with Poor Taste: The hilariously shit animation. The mouthflaps don’t even attempt to line up with the voice acting half the time. As expected of 1970s anime.

Best Moment So Far: Rikiishi’s release from juvie (Ep 22, 5:30). This is the template for every triumphant exit in anime ever. Bonus: Rikiishi wears a white suit. #Swag.

Midterm Grade: ++

  1. I kinda can’t wait to watch this when it’s all done! I’m not a fan of boxing but every anime i’ve watched that revolves around it has been amazingly well done. it’s alllll about the characters!

    • It’s got 74 episodes, and I’m currently editing episode 44. If you’re waiting till it ends, you might be waiting a while.
